The stripe-necked mongoose (Urva vitticolla), native to forests and shrublands in Sri Lanka, is the largest of the four mongoose species on the island, measuring roughly twice the size of a domestic cat. It has a rufous or greyish coat, and is characterised by a black stripe running along both sides of its neck. Males are larger than females but are otherwise similar in appearance. This diurnal species feeds on a wide range of prey, including frogs, crabs, small mammals, and reptiles.
