The steppe buzzard (Buteo buteo vulpinus), a subspecies of the common buzzard (Buteo buteo), has a widespread range and inhabits forested areas. This medium to large raptor is typically observed alone or in pairs. An opportunistic predator, it hunts over open grasslands, primarily preying on small mammals, but also consuming birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Steppe buzzards build large nests for their clutches, which are often reused.
