Star Tortoise

The Indian star tortoise (Geochelone elegans) is native to Sri Lanka, typically found in dry areas such as scrub forests, agricultural fields, grasslands, and even urban environments. Recognised for its striking shell pattern of black and orange-yellow streaks forming a star-like design, the species faces significant threats from habitat loss and poaching due to high demand in the illegal wildlife trade. Primarily herbivorous, these tortoises feed on a variety of plants, flowers, fruits, and occasionally scavenge animal carcasses. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with females being considerably larger and having flatter plastrons, while males have concave plastrons.
