The ruddy mongoose (Herpestes smithii), one of four mongoose species on the island, is native to Sri Lanka and India. Similar in appearance to the Indian grey mongoose (Urva edwardsii), it is distinguished by its slightly larger size and its characteristic black-tipped tail. These carnivorous mammals, which occasionally feed on plants and fruits, are most commonly found in dry zone jungles but are also often seen around urban areas. They are notorious for raiding chicken coops, stealing eggs or poultry. Typically observed in pairs or small family groups, the ruddy mongoose is likely the most commonly sighted mongoose species in Sri Lanka.
