Indian Peafowl

The Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus), is commonly found in both dry and wet zones, frequenting scrub jungles, reservoir banks, and urban areas. Although capable of flight, the peafowl prefers to walk, covering large areas during the day, and only using their wings when escaping threats and reaching their roosts.

Males are distinguished by their iridescent peacock-blue head and neck, with long tail feathers that are prominently displayed during the breeding season. Females have primarily brown plumage, making the sexes easily distinguishable. Indian peafowls have a varied diet consisting of grains, grasses, leaves, termites, grasshoppers, and small reptiles. They typically feed in the early morning and late evening. During the breeding season peahens lay eggs on the ground, often hidden among shrubs.
