The lesser whistling duck (Dendrocygna javanica), also known as the lesser whistling teal, is recognisable by its broad black and maroon wings and distinctive whistle in flight. Common in the low country and mid-hills of Sri Lanka, this freshwater bird frequents weedy tanks and wetlands. It lives in flocks, except during the breeding season when pairs form. A strong swimmer and diver, it feeds on aquatic plants, small fish, frogs and mollusks. Nests are hidden in grass clumps or tree cavities, where large clutches of up to 12 eggs are laid.
