Jungle Cat

The jungle cat (Felis chaus) resembles a large domesticated house cat with longer legs, a slightly shorter tail, and long ears tipped with dark hair. The Sri Lankan subspecies, Felis chaus affinis, is described as “lighter built” than its counterparts. It is typically found in grasslands, scrubland, and around paddy fields in the dry zone, preying on ground-nesting birds, rodents, hares, and occasionally fish. The jungle cat uses stalking and pouncing techniques, and has even been observed leaping to catch flying birds. It occupies dens when resting or feeling threatened. After an eight-week gestation period, the female gives birth to a litter of 2 to 3 kittens.
