Crimson Rose

The crimson rose (Pachliopta hector) is a large swallowtail butterfly distinguished by striking white bands on its forewings and vivid red markings on its hindwings. Its bright colouration acts as a warning to predators, signaling its inedibility due to toxins it sequesters from various species of Aristolochia, a genus of deciduous, herbaceous perennials consumed during the butterfly’s larval stage. Consequently, it is rarely targeted by predators. The crimson rose often basks with its wings fully spread, occasionally gathering in small groups. At night, it forms large roosting assemblies on the twigs and branches of trees and shrubs. Its diet, primarily consisting of floral nectar, aids in egg production and supports reproductive processes.
