Common Kingfisher

The Alcedo atthis taprobana, a subspecies of the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), is a resident breeder in Sri Lanka, found widely across the lowlands and hill country. This kingfisher is known for its striking blue upperparts and chestnut-coloured underside. It flies swiftly and produces distinct, high-pitched, metallic “tee tee” calls.

The common kingfisher’s diet mainly consists of fish, though it also feeds on other small aquatic animals, including crabs and amphibians. Consequently, it is commonly found near freshwater sources such as rivers, creeks, and reservoirs. Typically spotted alone or in pairs, the kingfisher often perches on bare twigs, waiting patiently for prey in the water below.
