The Ceylon snakehead (Channa orientalis) is an endemic predatory fish species found in freshwater habitats throughout southwestern Sri Lanka. It is distinguishable from other snakehead species by its colouration and absence of pelvic fins. The Ceylon snakehead feeds on plankton, insects, and small amphibians. Like all snakeheads, it is capable of short-term survival out of water due to an accessory breathing organ that allows it to respire atmospheric oxygen. Snakeheads are also mouthbrooders, with the male holding the offspring in his mouth until they are self-sufficient, while the female protects their territory.
