Barking Deer

The barking deer is an uncommon sight in Sri Lanka, dwelling in dense jungles and forests that provide ample cover. Males have relatively short antlers, while females possess small bony knobs and tufts of hair in the same location. Both have a short coat and unique tusk-like upper canines, about 1 inch long. When threatened, they emit a bark similar to a dog’s, hence their name. Solitary and territorial, they prefer staying near water sources. Barking deer are omnivorous, feeding on herbs, fruits, bird eggs, small animals, seeds, and grasses, using their canines and forelegs to catch small prey.
