The Asian openbill (Anastomus oscitans) is one of the most commonly observed stork species in Sri Lanka, primarily found in low-lying areas such as marshes, paddy fields, and embankments. This bird is easily recognised by its thick, yellowish beak, which has a characteristic gap between the mandibles. Its plumage is either white or grey, with a glossy greenish-black tail. The Asian openbill primarily feeds on freshwater snails, mussels, crabs, and fish, using its uniquely shaped beak to crack open hard shells. During the breeding season, these storks build clusters of nests made from sticks and twigs atop undergrowth in wetlands and swampy environments.
