We joined the Vidattaltivu Coalition, which encompassed several conservation organizations to aid in an effort to stop the degazettement of Sri Lanka’s 3rd largest Marine Protected Area (MPA) to make way for an aquaculture project. Designated as a Nature Reserve under the jurisdiction of the DWC, it is Sri Lanka’s largest Nature Reserve and only Marine Nature Reserve. A haven for migratory birds, blue swimmer crabs and one of the last refuges for endangered dugongs in Sri Lankan waters, the ecological importance of this area is paramount. We developed content for this public awareness campaign on behalf of the coalition, in order to evoke a community response to the potential destruction of this ecosystem. This multi-pronged campaign which also involved high-level lobbying amongst the relevant stakeholders was successful in ensuring the continued protection of this Nature Reserve.
