Sri Lankan Leopard

The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is a subspecies of leopard (Panthera pardus) known for its solitary nature. Each adult maintains a territory for hunting and living, and while territories may overlap, leopards generally avoid one another. They are opportunistic hunters, preying on a variety of animals, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. With sleek, powerful bodies, they stalk their prey by staying low to the ground and strike silently from a distance, aiming for the throat. Their impressive jumping and climbing abilities allow them to hoist prey up trees, keeping it away from scavengers. However, habitat loss and poaching pose significant threats to the species, contributing to a decline in their population.
