Spotted Deer

Found in lowland dry forests, scrub jungles, grasslands, and savannas. Spotted deer are the most common deer in Sri Lanka, grazing in large herds. They rely on grasslands for food and protection from predators like leopards. Males sport antlers and follow matriarchal herds during the mating season. Vocalizations include rutting calls and alarm barks. These deer are known for their distinctive white spots on a reddish-brown coat. They play a crucial role in their ecosystems by grazing, which helps maintain plant diversity.
