Rusty-spotted Cat

The rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus) is native to the Indian subcontinent and is smaller than the average house cat. Found primarily in dense forests, grasslands, and scrub, these elusive nocturnal hunters prowl the forest floor, feeding mainly on rodents, frogs, birds, and lizards, although they may climb trees to escape larger predators. They are easily recognised by their spotted coat and black facial markings that run between the ears. During breeding, females prepare dens in secluded areas, where they give birth to a litter of one to three kittens.
