Eurasian Hoopoe

Upupa epops ceylonensis is a subspecies of the Eurasian hoopoe (Upupa epops), found breeding across central to southern India and Sri Lanka. It is distinguished by its smaller size, and more pronounced rufous colouration compared to the nominate. This species also features black-and-white plumage on the wings and tail, and a fawn-coloured head adorned with a black-tipped crest.

The Eurasian hoopoe primarily feeds on insects but has also been observed consuming small reptiles, frogs, berries, and seeds. The incubation period lasts 15 to 18 days, during which the male provides food to the female. Incubation begins as soon as the first egg is laid, resulting in chicks hatching asynchronously. The chicks are brooded by the female for 9 to 14 days.
