Ninox scutulata hirsuta is a distinctive subspecies of the brown hawk-owl, or brown boobook, that is widespread throughout Sri Lanka. Well adapted to urban environments, these owls can be found on the periphery of home gardens, perched in trees or even on rooftop antennae. This medium-sized true owl species is distinguishable by its long tail, lack of distinct facial discs, and large yellow eyes. The brown hawk-owl is primarily nocturnal and has a varied diet that includes large insects, small birds, rodents, and frogs. Their distinctive call, an ‘oo-uk’, is often heard repeatedly at dusk and dawn.
