Ploceus philippinus philippinus is a subspecies of the baya weaver (Ploceus philippinus) that inhabits the lowlands of Sri Lanka. They are a highly gregarious species, foraging in flocks for wild grass seeds, germinating rice crops, and insects, while occasionally consuming frogs, geckoes, and molluscs. Baya weavers breed in colonies during the monsoon season, favouring thorny scrub near water bodies to build their distinctive pendulous nests.
