Red-wattled Lapwing

The red-wattled lapwing (Vanellus indicus) is a wading bird, commonly found in large groups around bodies of water and cultivated areas. This species is identifiable by its black head and breast, along with a black-tipped red bill. Sri Lanka is home to its own subspecies, Vanellus indicus lankae, which is slightly smaller and darker in colouration than the nominate. The red-wattled lapwing primarily feeds on insects, and during the breeding season, it lays its eggs in a depression in the ground.
